Slayer has a new album?
If your a child of the 80’s Speed Metal era of dark, fast songs that invoke of images of destruction, war and anager but now you’re in your early 30’s, you’ve got kids, a wife and a good job; the new Slayer album Christ Illusion is probaly the last album you were planning on buying. Until now.
Listening Christ Illusion makes me feel like I’m 17 again when the world could FOAD. It’s the lost album in between South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss which I think were their best ever. I went off to college when Decade of Aggression came out and the whole metal thing was becoming lame. Nirvana, Alice in Chains and even Dave Matthews Band were my new thing. But this new album kicks my a$$. Tight, Angry, Fast and Loud. Not bad for a band that can be by time-standars considered Classic Rock!! But Classic Rock my a$$ these guys emit an aura of forocity that could bring down the apolypcs on the junk that’s on the radio.
Christ Illusion opens with Flesh Storm in classic Slayer (or Metallica) style with a high pitched tone that rises up from the ground and launches into a fearice sonic attack. Speed, Speed, Speed. The tight fast chunky riffs coupled with the quick pounding double bass drums grab you attention for 25 seconds, a 1 second pause and then Tom Araya and the crew launch into full throtal verbal and sonic assualt.

Parts of both Catalyst and Skeleton Christ both remind me of South.. and Seasons.. which is a good thing.
Once track 4 hits Eyes Of The Insane, the ride starts coming to a hault and the speed and intensity wane a bit. But in the middle of Jihad they plug the intensity back in and the game is on.
So I started this post 2 weeks ago and I have listened to the album a few more times. All in all it’s good classic Slayer but it’s not something I can listen to more than a few times a week. It’s just too loud and frantic to listen to while programming.
Finnally if Metallica could do as Slayer has done and go back to their roots back when us 30 somethings were in our late teens and dig up some riffs form the Ride the Lightining and Master of Puppets era for just one more album, they could rekindle their old fans and reclaim their title of the true Monsters of Rock.
Anyway, if you didn’t like Slayer before you won’t like them now.
