Zoho Writer is just the thing I have been looking for to store documents that I can access either at work or home without having to do the flash drive or ftp thing. With Zoho I can creat docs im my private folder access them from where ever. The other bonus is I don’t have to deal with using MS Word at work and OO Writer at home (I use Linux on my home PC).
I know I could just use my blog for personal docs but there is an issue with Private Post in Wordpress andRSS Feeds. The issue is private posts keep showing up in my FeedBurner RSS Feed!! Not very private huh?
The other thing I could do is to just use FTP nd store my docs in a protected folder on the server but that brings up the MS vs OpenOffice issues I’ve had in the past. Not to mentition the version issues that can arise.
So after scanning the article, 17 MS Office Killers I found my way to Zoho. I am a little skeptial of any kind on “Online Office” app due to the state-less nature of the internet. And back in 1998 I had this very idea to use the browser as the interface to a complete office suite. My one other concern is security with these online document storage services. How safe is it?

With that out of the way I have found that Zoho Writer could another handy tool in the digital world. The document storage feature has 5 options: MyDocs which are private, Templates, Shared Docs, Public Docs and a Trash bin. Like all things on the internet Zoho is in beta and I have run across a few quirks with the app. The most noteable one is that the navigation menu will sometimes not expand to show the My Docs folder and requires relogging in to reset tha app.
I spoke too soon.
In the process of writing this (over a 24 hour time span) the bugs in Zoho Writer just keep flowing.
I was able to upload a doc last night but today when i fgot to work I started (or least tried) to up load some of my other off-line files. I click import and browse to my doc. I give it a name and click ok. The import dialog goes away and screen flcikers but no file has been imported. I tried this 3 times with different .txt files. No dice.
Also the UI runs much faster on WinXP w/ Firefox than Ubuntu w/Firefox? What’s that about?
Oh well I’m off to try Writely.
